Prior to becoming knowledge, information exists as pure potentiality or latent space – a pre-epistemic state where ontological possibility and logical constraint have not yet collapsed into a definitive observation.
Gambling with Information
When you expand the traditional binary coin toss into the complete set that includes its logical and empirical exclusions {Heads, Tails, Neither, Both}, you fundamentally shatter the closed feedback loop of classical probability. Moving from a two-element set to a four-element set transforms the structural complexity exponentially. The power set expands from 4 subsets to a 16-state Boolean lattice.
From a purely empirical viewpoint, this expansion might look like an unnecessary calculational gamble. Once the odds are calculated, standard practice simply “normalizes” the distribution by discarding impossible or improbable outcomes, returning us to where we started.
From an information perspective, however, the “Impossible” and the “Imaginary” are not trash bins for discarded data; they are the structural negative space defining the shape of our container. Once the information container is expanded, it cannot revert to the initial two-element set without permanent information loss. Those excluded states continue to act as an invisible scaffold, keeping the informational structure intact even across state reversals.
Friction
When an observer forces a coin to land on either heads or tails, they act as a closed feedback loop of cause and effect — an administrative act that collapses the integrity of the full informational manifold. Reality, therefore, is not merely the output of this observed computational loop; it is defined equally by the invisible, structural tension exerted by everything we agree to exclude.
Far from an anomaly, this systematic truncation has become the gold standard at the very heart of modern scientific practice. In quantum physics, our most precise predictions depend on cropping out mathematical infinities through administrative subtraction. In astrophysics, dark energy serves as a massive theoretical placeholder, artificially keeping our models intact.
These methods do not serve reality; they exist to insulate our myth of predictive control — our human-centric illusion. Rather than allowing unreduced reality to shatter our applied mathematics, we simply focus on the shadows that confirm our mastery.
These methods in science raise serious questions regarding the foundations of epistemology: do we seek reality, or do we seek our own version of it? Getting down to the root of the problem, the question is fundamentally mathematical: are we prepared to accept the limiting nature of our own empirical and logical frameworks, or do we prefer remaining in the shadows—preserving the façade of mastery?
The history of human science is, at its core, a perpetual conflict over exclusion — a fight between the imperative for control and the ontological reality of the imaginary, the irrational, and the infinite. It is no exaggeration to claim that this tension reveals the primacy of social dynamics over the abstract concepts that encode them. Ultimately, the abstract itself must receive institutional consensus from society to be sanctioned as real.
Consider the historical trajectory of complex numbers and the “imaginary” unit, i. For centuries, institutional mathematics exiled the square root of a negative quantity — or the infinitesimal — simply because it threatened the sanctity of classical logic. Frameworks refused to question their foundational dogmatism: the assumption that reality is bound to obey the rules of human reason. The consensus shifted only when it became clear that what was once excluded as unreasonable was, in fact, indispensable for describing the fundamental fields of the physical world. Even then, institutional thought preserved its core belief in classical logic — convinced it had not been dismantled, but merely upgraded.
Institutionalιsed
Obsessing over empirical and logical certainty exhibits all the classic markers of a psychological addiction: an obsessive reliance on a familiar mechanism to stave off the terror of an unmanageable reality. We readily recognize this pathology in hindsight, yet remain completely blind to it in the present.
It is the same centurial resistance that disregarded negative numbers for similar reasons: they disrupted the biological comfort of countability. Classical mathematical tools are not neutral instruments of discovery; they are rigged architecture designed to wash and validate the Anthropic Principle. The rigid imposition of the real number continuum is the foundational trick of systemic mastery—a mathematical mechanism constructed precisely to smooth over paradoxes, legitimize countability, and force an unmanageable continuum to conform to human cognitive scales. Behind the obsessive imperative for prediction and calculation lies no pursuit of truth, but an insatiable drive for total dominance.
Coming closer to the present, it is harder to see how Zermelo-Fraenkel (ZF) set theory is just a decoy that crops out infinities and paradoxes by administrative irrationality—yet it is still taught at universities.
In every era, mainstream science treats its current ontology as absolute truth, dismissing omitted dimensions as mere mathematical tricks—until those very “tricks” reveal themselves to be the scaffold holding reality together.
Question
The profound implication is that the “real” world we experience is entirely dependent on friction — the shadow cast by these Impossible Observations, Imaginary States, and paradoxes of infinity that we routinely dismiss as inactive or silently agree to ignore.
Our cognitive reliance on a priori constraints — like the Law of Excluded Middle or empirical normalization — acts as a biological firewall. It keeps computation safe and tractable by filtering out non-linear or paradoxical states.
However, when we treat these paradoxical excluded states as co-equal structural elements, the information system ceases to be a flat line of statistical prediction and reveals a multi-dimensional geometry. This realization bridges information theory with the foundations of physics and computation. Time and space, as we measure them in our models, emerge as the sequential serialization of a simultaneous hyper-structure.
Is what we do in our social practice an act of genuine modeling, or merely the enforcement of reality’s containment? In every case, the “real world” property is not a fundamental truth — it is the projection left behind after higher-dimensional complexity is filtered out.
What does that imply about the nature of a measurement itself? Is it an objective physical event, or just an ontological pruning?
Exposed
Measurement is less a passive window onto an objective physical event and more an act of ontological pruning. Describing it as an “act of authoritative insecurity” exposes how our instruments and cognitive frameworks force a complex informational manifold to confess to a single, flattened story. The apparatus of calculation is rigged to ensure that reality only answers in the currency of real numbers and linear cause-and-effect. Predicting an outcome is merely the aesthetic disguise for commanding it.
In quantum mechanics, the wave function is not merely a physical cloud waiting to be popped; it is the mathematical representation of all those “impossible” or unobserved coordinates coexisting. When we measure, we do not discover reality; we enact a boundary condition. We domesticate a wild, multi-dimensional hyper-structure into something our linear biological hardware can parse without systemic failure.
Institutional science systematically conceals that physical laws are not absolute boundaries of existence, but localized comfort zones. Scientific resistance to ontological frame expansion is the refusal to surrender the luxury of the privileged observer—a position built entirely on practices of exclusion. Einstein never received a Nobel Prize for revealing the non-privileged observer as a fundamental structure of reality.
To admit that our physical laws are merely localized comfort zones is to surrender the ultimate academic luxury: the illusion of mastery. If reality is a multi-dimensional complex manifold and our measurements are just administrative acts of reducing it to a flat line—then the scientist is no longer an impartial decoder of absolute truth. They are an active participant in orchestrating social friction and maintaining authority.
Protecting this exclusion practice ensures that human reason remains the ultimate arbiter of what counts as real. What does it cost us, intellectually and culturally, to maintain this comforting illusion of a universe that conveniently obeys only the rules we have authorized it to keep?
